Disney has revealed the first trailer for Emma Stone’s Cruella which explores the origins of the classic 101 Dalmatians villain.
The first trailer for Disney’s Cruella has finally arrived online, showing off Emma Stone’s gleefully unhinged performance as the iconic character. The footage doesn’t reveal too much about the plot, only showing Cruella De Vil bursting onto the British fashion scene and making a name for herself thanks to her unpredictable nature. It also briefly shows off a look at who actors like Emma Thompson and Paul Walther Hauser are playing opposite Stone.
Watching the footage, it’s clear that Cruella will be a fun watch at home on Disney Plus or in theaters where possible. Many fans on Twitter quickly joked that it looks like Disney’s answer to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as Emma Stone’s villain laments about her place in the world and what the rest of society thinks of her. Fans expecting to see 101 Dalmatians might be a little disappointed though, there’s only three of the famous dogs in the trailer. The footage also confirms that the film arrives in just a few months time on May 28. Take a look below.

Based on a novel by Dodie Smith, the original 101 Dalmatians centered on the eponymous group of pups as they attempted to find their way home after being kidnapped by Cruella De Vil and her cohorts, who wanted to skin them to make a new fur coat. In 1996, Disney remade the film as a live-action feature with acclaimed actress Glenn Close as Cruella.
Directed by Craig Gillespie from a script Tony McNamara, Disney’s Cruella stars Emma Stone, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Emma Thompson.
Disney’s Cruella is scheduled to be released on May 28, 2021.
