If I had to describe dungarees, the word polished probably would not be at the top of the list. For me, they immediately summon images of a long-haired, island-dwelling Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! or ‘90s children’s TV presenters. In both contexts, they are used to convey a dressed-down nonchalance, and so as someone who generally feels more comfortable in tailoring than the latest It sneakers, I’ve never quite seen the appeal of the trend. However, this season, something has shifted, and a whole host of Instagram’s best dressed might have changed my mind. (They have a funny habit of doing this.)
Lockdown has had a real impact on our wardrobes, and for those of us who are used to dressing up for our jobs, it’s been a lesson in balancing comfort with style. However, spotting the likes of Pernille Rosenkilde and Laura Jackson in chic dungarees has well and truly convinced me that this clothing item ticks all the boxes. If their outfits are anything to go by, a fancy blouse is a surefire way to make dungarees look more pulled-together. We’re also taking notes from Tamu McPherson, who opts for layered jewellery to achieve that polish. We also have a soft spot for the odd pop of colour, which will certainly make you stand out from the blue-clad crowd.
So without further ado, I present to you the four dungaree outfits that I’m taking cues from this summer. Scroll down to see what I’m loving.
