WarnerMedia is in the early stages of developing a live-action series based on the Harry Potter franchise for HBO Max.
HBO Max executives have reportedly met with potential writers to work on a live-action Harry Potter TV series for the streaming platform according to The Hollywood Reporter. However it’s very early on in development and there aren’t any writers or actors attached to the project as of yet. It’s unsurprising that WarnerMedia is looking to expand the Harry Potter franchise since it’s one of the company’s most successful properties, with the future of the series lying in the Fantastic Beasts films alongside the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy video game.
According to THR, there’s been a wide range of ideas discussed for the direction of the Harry Potter HBO Max series, which implies the company is looking to explore the wider Wizarding World away from the movies, much like Fantastic Beasts. It’s also interesting that the news states the series will be a live-action project, since an animated show could actually have quite a lot of potential given the right animation style. But Warner Bros. did stress that a series isn’t in full development at the moment, so it seems like all options are being explored before signing deals with writers and talent. Take a look at the statement below.
“There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

Here is the official synopsis for the most recent entry in the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:
At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
Directed by David Yates from a script written by J. K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Harry Potter franchise and HBO Max, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
