Warner Bros. and Legendary are reportedly close to a deal for Godzilla vs. Kong‘s release after the film was originally announced for HBO Max.
In December, Warner Bros. made the stunning move to release their entire 2021 slate to HBO Max alongside a theatrical release on the same day. Warner Bros.’s decision was met with pushback from various filmmakers and most notably, Legendary, due to their major role in financing Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary and Warner Bros. are now close to a deal when it comes to the release of Godzilla vs. Kong. With Warner Bros. and Legendary coming to an agreement, Godzilla vs. Kong will retain a simultaneous HBO Max and theatrical release on May 21. The deal for Dune is still being worked out as Denis Villeneuve is pushing for an exclusive theatrical release.
