When it comes to designer bags, our wish list is as long as the arm we’d dutifully carry them in. Of course, brands like Hermès, Chanel, and Loewe feature prolifically on it, as do new-wave labels including Khaite and Wandler. But the design house that claims the most positions has to be Chloé.
Relatively speaking, Chloé hasn’t been in the bag-making game all that long. Its first foray into arm candy territory came in 2005 when it debuted the Paddington, a gold padlock-adorned leather tote, which sold out its first run of 8,000 handbags before a single one even hit the boutique shelves, breaking retail records.
Fast-forward 16 years and the French fashion powerhouse has bestowed us with more It bags then we can count. There’s Tess, Drew, C, Nile, Darryl, Faye, Aby, Gladys, Daria, Betty, Edith, Sally, and Marcie, to name but a few. And now, joining their illustrious ranks is Woody, a bag tipped to take 2021 by storm.
Woody is a little different from its iconic siblings. Firstly, the bag’s not made from leather, be it real or faux. Instead, Woody’s body is constructed using a heavy-duty, durable canvas, trimmed with flashes of rust-coloured leather, which flank the logo-emblazoned cotton canvas ribbon handles. A thing of beauty, and although it’s undoubtedly made with the warmer months in mind, we’re already predicting the Woody will be a sell-out as soon as it debuts. Why? Because the shoe iteration was, and remains, a best-seller. Also affectionately named Woody, the flat rubber and cotton canvas slip-on sandal was a huge hit this past summer and has recently seen a restock at Net-A-Porter. Naturally, after its success, the designer shopping behemoth has also invested in the Woody tote in two sizes for 2021, knowing it’s going to sell like hotcakes.
“The Chloé Woody Canvas Tote is going to be a perfect bag for summer as it’s both practical and chic as well as being a different take on the basket bag, which has proved a big hit for us, season after season,” says Libby Page, Net-A-Porter’s Senior Fashion Market Editor. “The canvas material makes it easy to take from the city to the beach, and the subtle branding will appeal to the Chloé woman.”
It certainly appeals to us, and we’re guessing it’ll appeal to more women, too, given the fact its price-point is significantly lower than Chloé’s leather bag offering. In any case, prepare to see a lot of the Chloé Woody Tote Bag when it launches later this spring. Until then, scroll below to shop the matching Woody sandals and to peruse the new-season Chloé items currently on our dream shopping list.
