Marvel Studios teased what fans can expect from Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi in the intriguing first synopsis for the upcoming film.
Now that production has wrapped on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios has finally released the synopsis for the film, which stars Simu Liu in the titular role. We still don’t have an official look at any of the characters in the solo movie, but set photos from Australia teased the huge scale of the film with a sprawling village set. But the recently revealed synopsis teases Shang-Chi’s past comes back to haunt him in the film.
The synopsis comes from Marvel’s website, noting that Simu Liu’s hero has to “confront’’ his past when he’s faced with the Ten Rings group. Audiences have seen the Ten Rings play a part in previous films since they were the group who kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man film. While Guy Pearce’s version of the Mandarin was using the group as a cover-up for his Extremis experiments in Iron Man 3. Take a look at the Shang-Chi synopsis from Marvel Studios below.
“Opening Summer 2021, Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.’’

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised in an isolated compound located in China and trained by his father Fu Manchu, a Chinese crimelord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down Fu Manchu’s criminal empire.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, and Ronny Chieng. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
