Star Wars creator George Lucas opened up about why he decided to move on from the franchise and sold Lucasfilm to Disney back in 2012.
October 30, 2012 will go down as a day long remembered by Star Wars fans due to the announcement of Disney acquiring Lucasfilm and Episode VII. Years later and several new films released, Star Wars is once again at a much different place with the franchise now moving towards television thanks to the massive success of The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.
Before George Lucas decided to move on from Star Wars, he was heavily involved in crafting the sequel trilogy. Some ideas would eventually be used in the new films while others were scrapped in favor of something more in-line with the original trilogy. A now-retired Lucas explained in the new book, The Star Wars Archives: Episodes I-III, why he ultimately sold the company:
“At that time, I was starting the next trilogy; I talked to the actors and I was starting to gear up. I was also about to have a daughter with my wife. It takes 10 years to make a trilogy — Episodes I to III took from 1995 to 2005,. In 2012 I was 69. So the question was am I going to keep doing this for the rest of my life? Do I want to go through this again? Finally, I decided I’d rather raise my daughter and enjoy life for a while. I could have not sold Lucasfilm and gotten somebody to run the productions, but that isn’t retiring.”
