WarnerMedia is trying to make its mark in the streaming wars as COVID-19 rages on around the world. While the studio launched Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in theaters a few months back, they recently announced a theatrical and HBO Max Christmas Day release for Wonder Woman 1984. On Thursday, Warner Bros. took that move one step further by setting their entire 2021 slate for HBO Max.

The news of major tentpoles heading to HBO Max is undoubtedly a major blow to theaters that are already struggling amid the pandemic. When Wonder Woman 1984 is released on HBO Max, it will be available for a month at no additional cost unlike Disney’s approach with Mulan. Up until now, you could give HBO Max a try for free, but that trial option has now been removed with more subscribers expected to be on the way for Wonder Woman 1984. HBO Max currently costs 14.99 per month or six months for $69.99.

Full details on the sequel’s plot are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to follow Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince as she comes into conflict with a formidable new adversary named Cheetah and businessman Maxwell Lord. Wonder Woman was last seen in Zack Snyder’s DC superhero team-up movie Justice League.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, the film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to be released on December 25 in theaters and on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the DC Extended Universe and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content.
