Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson revealed that the title was an idea he created early on when writing the sequel.
Although Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was viciously divisive among fans, it’s hard to deny that it played with some fascinating themes and ideas in a galaxy far, far away. But when developing the core concepts of the sequel, the title was apparently created quite quickly according to the director. Surprisingly, a brief shot from The Last Jedi recently made the headlines after an editor pointed out that it’s actually shown in reverse.
After The Rise of Skywalker closed out the trilogy in 2019, J.J. Abrams opened up about The Last Jedi, praising its bold ideas – but noted that its meta-approach could be the reason behind the fan backlash. But when discussing The Last Jedi on Twitter, director Rian Johnson was asked whether the title was given to him by Lucasfilm and Disney or whether he personally created it. He briefly explained that he came up with the title very early when plotting the story for the second film in the sequel trilogy.
It was me, had it very early in the writing process.
