Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed the real reason Warner Bros. redesigned Steppenwolf for the theatrical cut.
After the recent trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League revealed a better look at the original design for Steppenwolf in the film, the director explained the reason why Warner Bros. went in a different direction for Ciaran Hinds’ villain. Snyder himself has recently opened up about the project in various interviews, while cinematographer Fabian Wagner took to Instagram to show off a huge collection of set photos highlighting different heroes.
In a breakdown on Vero’s YouTube channel, Zack Snyder discussed the trailer in detail for DC fans, and when it comes to the arrival of Steppenwolf in the footage he explained that the design was initially too scary for the studio. The director noted that he was “a little too intense,” but he thinks the villain needed to look that way so he was truly threatening instead of just a C-list enemy.
“There were discussions and a lot of back and forth about the new design and the creation of this new design. I think the initial thought was that he was a little too scary and a little too alien and a little too intense. I personally thought he was awesome and that he represented a real threat, and does represent a real threat, not just to the Justice League, but to the entire planet. I think he looks amazing and that the team has done a great job.”
