A new report from Deadline says a theatrical release is still being eyed for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow instead of a streaming debut on Disney Plus.
As the pandemic continues to cause havoc for upcoming blockbuster releases from major studios, a new Deadline report says that Disney is still planning to debut Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in theaters once it’s safer to do so. Given that Tenet didn’t quite break the box office like Warner Bros. was hoping for alongside the lukewarm reaction to Mulan when it arrived on Disney Plus, it’s unsurprising that the company isn’t open to risking what would typically be a financially successful movie.
Deadline reported that a number of anonymous sources at the company revealed that the Scarlett Johansson movie is still aiming for a theatrical release at some point in the future. Although since the current situation is unpredictable, it’s unclear when that might be. An investor spoke out last month regarding Black Widow, saying that the company should release the Marvel Studios movie on Disney Plus so it can rival other streaming services like Netflix.
