California Republicans announced a ballot measure Tuesday enabling ride-hail providers such as Uber and Lyft to deal with their drivers as independent contractors, not employees. With 72% of the vote counted, Proposition 22 is winning with a 58-percent into 42-percent margin. That is a huge enough cause of the Associated Press to endeavor its passing.

Uber’s stock climbed 14% in Wednesday trading.

The measure needed substantial financial backing from Uber, Lyft, along with other”gig market” firms that use substantial numbers of drivers. They financed equally signature collecting and also an costly advertisement blitz to persuade voters to encourage it.
