Superman Returns star Brandon Routh reveals why Warner Bros. chose not to pursue a sequel to the 2006 film also starring Kate Bosworth and James Marsden.
Although fans have come to love Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, the film wasn’t the roaring success it could’ve been when it first arrived in theaters back in 2006. But after reprising his Kryptonian role in Crisis On Infinite Earths, Routh explained to Geek House Show that he’s not ruling out another return just yet. He pointed out that other actors like Michael Keaton are being brought back to play roles they’ve already starred in so it’s “an absolute possibility.”
“That’s always a possibility and, of course, as they’re bringing in Michael Keaton which I’m excited about and some other people from the past DC projects. I think it’s very exciting. It worked really well with Crisis on Infinite Earths and I was proud and honored to be a part of it and to reprise my Superman. So, it’s an absolute possibility, you can do anything. Everybody lives and dies all the time.”
But when asked about why a Superman Returns sequel never materialized, Brandon Routh explained that it was a combination of factors for the studio. Even though there was always the intention of doing a second film, the creatives who pushed the first film forward left to work on other projects. And with the people invested in the character not onboard, Warner Bros. didn’t think the box office returns ($3931.1 million) on the film were enough to warrant a sequel.
“The intention was to do a sequel, always to do, with a big tentpole movie like that. They want to make more as long as they feel like they’ve recouped the money that they invested into the film. At the end of the day, the studio, Warner Brothers, decided it was too much of a gamble for them to do a sequel. The creative entities, the writers and the directors were on to other things. Certain people at the studio who were excited about Superman had left to go on to other projects at other studios. So, it was both the passion and the interest in Superman dissipated and the movie, I guess for them, didn’t bring back enough monetary success for them to pull the trigger on it.”
