Suicide Squad director David Ayer explained his original cut was “ripped to pieces” and also revealed who rewrote huge portions of the film.
It’s no secret that David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was vastly changed during production and post-production which led to a hugely disappointing final version of the film which wasn’t well-received by fans or critics. But over the last year, Ayer himself has opened up about the situation and revealed his original plans for various characters. While many fans have campaigned to get Warner Bros. to release the original cut of the film, the director took to Twitter to stress how much footage was left on the cutting room floor.
David Ayer was answering questions from fans on Twitter when he revealed that the first 40 minutes of Suicide Squad was the hardest to cut, and his original vision for the film was “ripped to pieces” by the studio. He pointed out that the negative reception to Batman v Superman combined with Deadpool‘s undeniable success caused the studio to rethink the direction for the supervillain team-up movie. He then explained that Geoff Johns was the one who rewrote pages of the script that he had to reshoot. Take a look at David Ayer discussing the film below.

It was ripped to pieces – I can’t emphasize that enough https://t.co/O40q3Qozy7

For sure that became a factor – but the reason was BVS got chewed up by the critics, and the success of Deadpool – the studio leadership at the time panicked. Then major elements of my cut were ripped out before I could mature the edit. Then Johns wrote pages I had to reshoot https://t.co/MNmiXoH1Cc

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
