The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman discussed how scary the Netflix series will be as well as which stories will be brought from the page to the screen.
Netflix has already made a start on The Sandman production according to Neil Gaiman, who wrote the original comics the series is based on. He recently spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about the upcoming series starring Tom Sturridge, Gaiman revealed he’s seen a camera test of Morpheus trapped in a glass prison before assuring fans it will still be scary. He confirmed that some of the stories taken from the comics are A Hope in Hell, where Morpheus travels to Hell to retrieve something stolen from him, and 24 Hours, following a diner where all the customers give into their darkest desires. Collectors is set at a convention for serial killers while Dream a Little Dream focuses on a woman addicted to Dream’s sand. Although Gaiman was careful to note that it’ll also briefly tap into other genres and themes, much like the original source material.
“I’ve been watching dailies, but nothing produced the profound, emotional reaction on me that watching a camera test of our Morpheus in his glass prison did. I saw him and said, ‘Oh, this is Sandman.’ It feels so amazingly Sandman. You won’t believe how Sandman it is. It will be scary. But it will be lots of other things, too, because the joy of Sandman is that it’s a lot of different things in the soup, and you can taste all the flavors.”
It’s been a long road for The Sandman to get a live-action adaptation, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to star at one time. Neil Gaiman discussed the numerous proposals he’s seen from various creatives which might not have treated the series with the care it deserves. Gaiman even revealed that one pitch didn’t introduce Morpheus until later in the show. But it sounds like he’s pleased with the direction for Netflix’s The Sandman.
“I have seen bad Sandman TV series proposals. Some of them are from incredibly talented people who said, ‘You can’t make this into TV!’ About 10 years ago, there was a fantastic showrunner who pitched a Sandman TV show that didn’t introduce Morpheus until the fourth episode!”
