Warner Bros. chair-CEO Ann Sarnoff doesn’t regret the decision to release Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in theaters last month and revealed the studio is pleased with the film’s box office performance.
Christopher Nolan’s Tenet managed to be one of the few films that dared a theatrical release during COVID-19. As a result, Tenet opened in as many markets as it could and has earned $52 million domestically and $341 million in total. During normal times, any studio would view Tenet‘s gross as a box office bomb given its $200 million budget, but Warner Bros. is looking at the numbers with a positive perspective.
During a recent interview with Variety, Warner Bros chair-CEO Ann Sarnoff discussed the decision to have Tenet hit theaters during COVID-19 and revealed the studio is happy with the results Christopher Nolan’s latest film has produced so far:
“We’re very pleased with the results of Tenet. A couple of things: we knew it would over index in the international markets. Christopher Nolan has a huge, following, of course in the U.S., but his other movies have typically over indexed in international markets. If you remember back in June, July, August, the international markets were more open. We had this amazing movie, I don’t know if you’ve seen it, that really deserved to be seen on the big screen.”
