The director behind Wonder Woman 1984, Patty Jenkins, opens up on why she decided to cast Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord.
Fans were both surprised and excited when Pedro Pascal joined Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 as the film’s villain, Maxwell Lord. He’d previously been seen in compelling roles in Game of Thrones, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Netflix’s Narcos. But in a recent interview with Variety, Jenkins discussed the reasons behind her choice bringing Pascal onboard, calling him “one of the most appealing people” she knows.
“I continually am so surprised when everybody pegs him as such a serious guy. I have to say, Pedro is one of the most appealing people I have known. He instantly becomes someone that everybody invites over and you want to have around and you want to talk to.”
Patty Jenkins went on to reveal that she’d previously worked with Pedro Pascal on a pilot episode for a series that didn’t get picked up. The director explained that the star didn’t have to prove anything to get the role since Jenkins thought he’d be an unexpected pick for the villain. Before his DC Extended Universe debut, Pascal will next be seen reprising his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 2, who’s a completely different kind of character to his role in the Wonder Woman sequel.
“I worked with him, so I knew him. I didn’t need him to prove anything for me. I just loved the idea of him, and I thought he would be kind of unexpected, because he doesn’t scream ‘villain.’”
