Star Wars prequels star Ewan McGregor has revealed when the Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming to Disney Plus is now expected to begin filming.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi project has gone through several changes before and after it was announced. The series was initially conceived as a film with Stephen Daldry attached to directed. A couple years later and Ewan McGregor’s return was finally announced as a series for Disney Plus. Production was initially going to begin this year, but it was pushed back due to reported script issues.
Ewan McGregor revealed earlier this year that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin filming at the start of next year and also utilize the same ground-breaking technology from The Mandalorian. During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, McGregor shared a brief update on when filming is now set to begin:
“We start shooting it in March next year.”
The Star Wars prequels actor also touched on channeling an older Alec Guinness this time around:
“The fun thing about doing them in the first place, when I was much younger, was trying to imagine Alec Guinness and how he would play these streams as a younger guy. It led me to watch a lot of his early work, which I hadn’t seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films he’d been in and I just had such a great time studying him in those movies. This time, I will be much closer in age to him and it will be my challenge to sort of meet him somewhere. It’s a great honor to try and pretend to be him.”

Directed by Deborah Chow from scripts written by Job Harold, Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is just one of three officially announced Star Wars shows for Disney Plus. The Mandalorian debuted on the streaming service last year with stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, and Carl Weathers. The series was written by Jon Favreau, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist is also on board as a co-executive producer.
An untitled Rogue One prequel centered on Cassian Andor is also in development with Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk reprising their respective roles. The Americans producer Stephen Schiff serves as showrunner and the series is expected to begin filming this year.
