The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday unanimously declared the Open Courts Act–legislation to reevaluate PACER, the federal courts’ method for obtaining public records. The proposition would assure no cost public access to private records, finishing the current practice of charging 10 cents a page to get several files –and search results.
The bill must nevertheless be passed by the entire House and the Senate and signed by the president. With Election Day only seven months away, the action is not likely to become law in that session of Congress.
Nonetheless, the vote is important as it suggests the width of Congressional support for ripping the PACER paywall. The laws would be co-sponsored by Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) , whose invoice we coated in 2018, along with also a fellow Georgian, Democrat Hank Johnson.
