After a summer of coronavirus surges—including infections, hospitalizations, and deaths—Americans are hoping that the spread of the highly infectious virus will slow this fall. However, if we want to flatten the curve, there are several things that need to be done first. In an interview with Today, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease doctor revealed what has to happen in the next few weeks in order to avoid the pandemic from worsening. Read on, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.1 Dr. Fauci's Warning About How Labor Day Weekend Could Result in a Surge of CasesDr. Fauci hopes that Americans will learn from previous mistakes made during earlier holiday weekends when celebrating the end of summer. "When you have a holiday like Labor Day—we have seen after the 4th of July, after Memorial Day—we saw a surge of cases," he explained. To prevent more outbreaks, he suggests sticking to the fundamentals. "Wear a mask, keep social distancing, avoid crowds. You can avoid those kinds of surges. You don't want to be someone who is propagating the outbreak. You want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem."2 Dr. Fauci Discussed When We Will Have a VaccineAccording to Dr. Fauci, within the next few months we will know if a vaccine is on the horizon. "I believe that by the time we get to this calendar year, we will feel comfortable that we do have a safe and effective vaccine," he revealed. 3 Dr. Fauci Discussed the Prospect of a Emergency Use Authorization VaccineDr. Fauci isn't entirely confident that an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) vaccine is likely. "I would not be comfortable with a vaccine unless it was shown in a clinical trial clearly to be safe and effective," he explained. "I've been through a number of vaccine trials when EUA's have ultimately been done but they have been done when there is enough data to feel that it was safe and effective for the American public."4 Dr. Fauci Commented on Sending Kids Home From CollegeYoung adults around the country are flooding college campuses, and outbreaks have been reported at several schools already. However, Dr. Fauci is adamantly against closing up schools and sending kids home, fearing it could worsen the pandemic. "It's the worst thing you can do," he pointed out. "Keep them at the university in a place that's sequestered enough from the other students. Don't have them go home because they could be spreading in their home state."5 Dr. Fauci On If He Is Concerned About a Possible TwindemicDr. Fauci confirmed that he is concerned about a possible "Twindemic"—what could happen when coronavirus coincides with flu season. The best way to avoid this from happening? Get the pandemic under control ASAP. "What I would really like to see is a full court press to get us way down as a baseline so when you get these cases in the fall they won't surge up," he says. "They will be controllable."
