That Was A 180! Ellen Pompeo Trying To Convince Everyone Grey’s Anatomy ‘Should End’!

Looks like Ellen Pompeo no longer wants to spend the rest of her life playing Meredith Grey!

As ABC decides whether or not to renew Grey’s Anatomy after its surprisingly popular 18th season, the show’s star admitted she’s not only thinking about hanging up her scrubs — she’s actively trying to make it happen behind the scenes!

She said in a new interview with Insider:

“I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end.”

Whoa!

While it’s understandable that anyone starring on a primetime drama for almost two decades would want a change, this is a surprising revelation coming from Pompeo, seeing as she said just a year ago she didn’t want to “run away” from the show!

As we reported at the time, the now-52-year-old insisted she had no plans to leave the show because she “made a decision to make money” and wanted to milk the over $20 million she makes from the show per year, plus the additional estimated $6 to $7 million she earns as a producer. She mused:

“It didn’t make a lot of sense for me to sort of walk away because I knew it was such a downloadable show. I knew the streaming numbers, so it just made sense I want a piece of this pie, too. I’m not just going to have one bite and walk away and let everybody else keep profiting for years.”

But now, it appears Ellen has had her fill.

In the new sit-down, she confessed she’s hesitant about signing on for yet another season because she isn’t quite sure the Shonda Rhimes-produced series will be able to move forward with quality content.

She mused:

“I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?”

Meanwhile, she claims everyone else on the show still has pie on the brain. Ellen added:

“Everyone’s like, ‘Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.’”

Again, she makes a fair point. No one likes it when a show becomes a shell of its former self in the final seasons.

Still, why wasn’t the mother-of-three concerned about this a year ago? Surely, filming during a pandemic likely took its toll — but is there some other reason? Maybe the behind-the-scenes controversies have finally crossed a line, with onscreen love interest Patrick Dempsey being accused of “terrorizing the set”?
