‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Originally Featured A Touching Uncle Ben Moment

Spider-Man: Homecoming co-writer Jonathan Goldstein revealed that there was originally a moment in the script that referenced Uncle Ben.

Spider-Man may have made his Marvel Cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War but the big splash he made with the franchise was in Homecoming. The film skipped over Spider-Man’s origin story, which was a breath of fresh air considering we had seen Peter Parker’s descent into web-madness all the way back in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man.

One glaring omission from the MCU films has been the lack of references towards Uncle Ben, a key component to Peter Parker’s journey as the web crawler. While the character has been hinted at, very rarely has he been mentioned in the entirety of the MCU. It turns out, however, that the first film in the MCU Spider-Man franchise originally featured a touching moment that referenced Peter’s idol.

Co-writer Jonathan Goldstein revealed on Twitter that there was originally a scene where Aunt May takes Peter to the closet where they choose one of Uncle Ben’s old suits for the Homecoming dance.

We wrote a scene where May takes Peter to the closet and they choose one of Ben’s old suits which she still hadn’t thrown away.

While the moment would have been touching, it also would have raised a few eyebrows considering Uncle Ben hadn’t been mentioned up until that point. Besides, Uncle Ben’s death is a weighty issue and a line that doesn’t signify much would have undermined the character. The MCU Spider-Man is considerably different than the previous live-action versions, so maybe it’s best that Uncle Ben’s death isn’t mentioned as much. After all, Spider-Man: Far From Home dealt with Peter reeling over Iron Man’s death who, symbolically, is another Uncle Ben.

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is umasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Marvel’s latest stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Alfred Molina.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the film, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
