Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Doctor Strange’s Mentor Role In ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Benedict Cumberbatch has opened up about playing Spider-Man’s mentor as Doctor Strange in No Way Home.

Early on in the development process of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange would be co-starring in the film. The nature of the characters’ relationship, however, was less clear with some speculating that he would take over the mentor role that was originally filled by Tony Stark. The first trailer at least partially proved this to be true, with Doctor Strange at first acting friendly with Peter Parker before getting more serious when a spell goes wrong.

As the release date for Spider-Man: Far From Home gets ever closer, more details are steadily being revealed about the film with the cast and crew opening up about what fans can expect from the movie. In a recent interview with Empire, Benedict Cumberbatch opened up about Doctor Strange’s new role as Peter Parker’s mentor figure and how the dynamic was set to shift throughout the film:

“There’s a shade of the [Tony] Stark relationship… It’s not as intimate to begin with. Because of how experienced a superhero he is, it’s a strange dynamic and it kind of shifts into something far more parental and corrective. And then it shifts again.”

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is umasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Alfred Molina.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently set to be released on December 17, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch’s role as Doctor Strange and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
