The Flash director Andy Muchietti has described the emotional time-traveling journey Barry Allen will go through in his first solo film.
Andy Muschietti’s upcoming The Flash is set to adapt the iconic Flashpoint storyline, which sees Barry Allen going back in time to save his mother from dying. In doing so, Barry changes the fabric of his universe, causing everything that can go wrong to go wrong. While the film won’t be directly adapting the storyline, like Martha Wayne becoming Joker, it’s clear that some of the emotional resonance from the colorful pages will jump onto the big screen.
Speaking at DC FanDome China, director Andy Muschietti described how emotional Barry Allen’s journey will get as he goes back in time. The IT director also touched upon what drew him to the project.
“Mainly the emotional aspects of the story were very compelling to me. Obviously, it’s a superhero movie, it’s a big spectacle adventure, but what really brought me into it was the emotional power of it. There’s an emotional message in the story, it’s also a time-traveling story which is always very attractive to me. Time travel has something that is inherently compelling in general, but this one is very special because it’s a very intimate conflict.”
“It’s about a boy who is looking for his mother, and that’s what was so attractive to me, that emotional drive.”
Barry Allen lost his mother when he was nine. Her death also led to his father being falsely imprisoned. At the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Barry gets a job as a junior forensic scientist, something he hopes will give him the expertise to clear his father’s name.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline, which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.
The upcoming solo film will star Ezra Miller reprising their role as Barry Allen from Justice Leauge joined alongside Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Ron Livingston replacing Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, Sasha Calle debuting as Supergirl, and the return of Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as their versions of Batman.
