‘Eternals’: Kumail Nanjiani Recalls How Bomb Scare Halted Production

Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani opened up about the rumored bomb scare that halted production.

Back in the November of 2019 while the Eternals was filming, it was reported that an unexploded bomb from World War II was found on Canary Island of Fuerteventura, just off the coast of Spain. The island used to be a Nazi base and the bomb was a remnant from the era. As soon as the bomb was discovered, the cast and crew, including stars Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden, were evacuated.

The news came from the UK tabloid The Sun and wasn’t confirmed by other sources, so the Eternals bomb scare was treated as more of a rumor rather than a concrete report. It turns out, however, that the bomb scare was completely real. In an interview with Empire (Via The Direct), Kumail Nanjiani briefly touched upon how the scare changed the entire shooting schedule.

“Some of the actors found this metal thing and were like, ‘Hey, what’s that?’… I remember being like, ‘Guys why’s the schedule changing? WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THERE’S A BOMB?!?”

Well, that’s as solid confirmation as one can get. Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Kingo in the film, was the only actor who touched upon the bomb scare. Nanjiani’s director, Chloe Zhao, instead brought up another scare that halted production on Eternals.

“It was pretty grueling at times… at one point there was a sandstorm and we all had to huddle together in a tent unable to open our eyes.”

Eternals is set to be one of Marvel’s riskiest stories so it oddly makes sense that the production on it was far more sinister than any other. In any case, it’s great that production on Marvel’s latest ended up being safe and no one was hurt.

Here is the synopsis for Eternals:

“When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.”

Chloé Zhao directed Eternals from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Barry Keoghan as Druig.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
