Andrew Garfield explained the enduring legacy of playing Spider-Man in film.
Spider-Man is not only one of the most iconic superheroes of all-time, but one of the most-recognizable characters in modern pop culture. The relatability of Peter Parker, Miles Morales and many others that wear the mask is part of why the character is so beloved by fans across multiple generations. So far, three actors have portrayed Peter Parker in live-action films, and Andrew Garfield is aware of the significance of the role.
Andrew Garfield portrayed Peter Parker in two The Amazing Spider-Man films. Although the reception of those films is mixed, he still has plenty of fans of his portrayal of the webhead. The Academy Award-nominated actor grew up loving the character, and although his experience on the franchise came to an abrupt end (we’ll see about that in December), he still reveres the role the same way Shakespearean actors revere Hamlet and Macbeth. He explained to Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen that he doesn’t agree that prominence of Spider-Man and his Rogues Gallery of villains is oversaturated onscreen:
“I’m afraid I can’t co-sign that one with you. It’s like Hamlet, like you can never get enough Hamlets or Macbeths. I will vouch for the character for a second in the sense that it’s the only superhero where he’s covered head to toe. You don’t see skin color, you don’t see sexual orientation, you don’t see any of those things. Everyone can project themselves into the suit, and I think that’s why he’s probably the most beloved superhero universally, throughout every culture, throughout every race… I think so. I really do think so. And there’s also an ordinariness to Peter Parker that everyone can project themselves into as well. So, for me, when my tenure was done and Tom Holland’s tenure started, it was…I don’t share your sentiments, I’m afraid. I was very happy and very excited. And yes, it was the first Halloween costume when I was three. My mum made it out of felt, it was this beautiful thing. So I get it, I get the hunger, it’s something that I can get down with.”
A few years removed from the underperformance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it appears that Andrew Garfield has nothing but gratitude for the experience. Following his departure from the role, he went on to work in acclaimed films such as 99 Homes, Hacksaw Ridge, Silence and Under the Silver Lake. He also won the Tony Award for his performance in the play Angels in America. He will next appear in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick… BOOM!.
