Dune director Denis Villeneuve says that all Marvel movies are a “cut and paste of other films”.
Well, here we go again. Denis Villeneuve has been doing the press rounds for Dune after it premiered at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The large-scale sci-fi epic is set to debut in cinemas and on HBO Max this October. Anticipation for Dune has been through the roof thanks to the stellar cast Warner Bros. and Denis Villeneuve have rounded out. Fans of Frank Herbert’s best-selling sci-fi magnum opus have been waiting for a proper adaptation of the “unfilmable” book for decades and early chatter says the wait has been more than worth it.
The chatter around Dune‘s ambitions and positive early reviews has now quickly shifted because of Denis Villeneuve’s comments regarding Marvel. In a chat with El Mundo, the outlet discussed with Villeneuve the artistic merit behind big-budget blockbusters.
“Just think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposal and, therefore, political. I have never felt like a loss or an impediment to have a generous budget to do what I wanted to do. Upside down. Who said that a movie on a big budget can’t be artistically relevant at the same time? I am currently thinking of people like Christopher Nolan or Alfonso Cuarón.”
The outlet continued by bringing up Martin Scorsese’s infamous comments in 2019 when he suggested that Marvel films were more akin to theme park rides than cinema. Denis Villeneuve agreed with Scorese’s comments, even going so far as to say that all Marvel films are the same and that they’re turning audiences into zombies.
“Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a “cut and paste” of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit … But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all.”
It should be noted that El Mundo is a Spanish publication and it’s entirely possible that the Dune director’s comments may have been misconstrued or misrepresented.
During 2019, Scorsese’s comments resulted in tons of backlash, from Marvel stars and directors to fans in general. One can only imagine the heap of trouble Villeneuve is going to get for his Marvel comments.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.
