James Gunn On Why Starro Is The Suicide Squad’s Main Villain

James Gunn reveals why he chose Starro as the villain for The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad is already packed with villains that form the team known as Task Force X, so it would make sense that you’d need a huge threat for them to face together. Director James Gunn knew that too, and he had the perfect choice in mind. Gunn went the Invasion of the Body Snatchers route and chose iconic DC Character Starro to take on the likes of Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and Peacemaker.

Starro is a gigantic starfish with a huge eyeball in the middle of his face that sends out mini versions of himself to take over the bodies of humans or aliens alike. During a Q&A with Gunn, the director revealed exactly why he chose the iconic DC villain. “I wanted a major DC villain that is a major DC villain that people wouldn’t expect to be in a movie, and I’ve always loved Starro. I mean, as a kid, I found Starro completely terrifying. The idea of this giant starfish with one big eye that shoots these things out of them that take over people’s brains, like those old pictures with like Superman with this thing on his face, always scared the s–t out of me.” James Gunn reveals. “So it was about taking something that was completely Kaiju-ridiculous, putting him in a setting that is in the gritty streets of Cologne, Panama, and then allowing him to do his scary business. But he’s also completely outrageous. That mix of things appealed to my aesthetic is all it was.”

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
