Filming on The Lord of the Rings series from Amazon is underway in New Zealand, where the Peter Jackson films were also famously filmed. The series is said to take place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth’s history, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit. Recently, New Zealand minister for economic development and tourism Stuart Nash revealed the massive budget to Morning Report that will trump Avengers: Infinity War:

“What I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone. This is fantastic, it really is … this will be the largest television series ever made.”

$650 million is around $465 million in U.S. dollars. For reference, Avengers: Infinity War cost $316 million, while shows like The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, and Marvel Studios’ shows cost around $100 million per season. The budget for The Lord of the Rings series easily makes it the most expensive show ever made, and it’s also worth noting Amazon paid $250 million for the rights to the series.
